Volunteering in Flint

Yesterday me and some of the girlfriends/wifes of the Redwings took three cars loaded with water, to one of the poorest cities in the U.S, Flint. Known for one of the worst murder and crime rates.

It was an eye opening experience. We didn’t know much before we got there, more than we were gonna provide water to the people. I think most of you know about the water crises in Flint, right? To save money, in april 2014, they unhooked the people of Flint from their fresh water drinking source, Lake Huron, and instead made the public drink from the toxic Flint River, also using bad lead pipes. Long story, but the water has a super high level of lead and its totally toxic. They can’t use it for anything, and it damage the brain. Just terrible.

This guy showed us how they make laundry soap, in the cheapest way possible. That may be something we do next time we come back.

We volunteered with Catholic charities. Their Center of hope, is a community center for the recovery of Flint, that is now gonna go thru a well needed renovation.
They told us almost all the items that are donated are gone the same day. And also that they take everything, these people really have nothing. People are coming here for a meal, to warm up, and get seen and get some self esteem, for clothes, hygien products and more.

Check this video out for more info.

It was a very touching day and that made me feel even more grateful for the life I have with my wonderful family.

It’s just devastating to think about all the people around the world that are in need.
You can always help a little at least…
